COLUMBUS, OH — In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Cambodian genocide, the Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Education Commission will host Loung Ung, a survivor of the atrocities and acclaimed author of First They Killed My Father, on April 15 at the Columbus Metropolitan Main Library.
The free event, which begins at 6 p.m. in the library’s auditorium, will include Ung’s keynote address, an audience Q&A, and a book giveaway and signing. Though there is no cost to attend, advance registration is required through the Columbus Library website.
Ung’s memoir, published in 2000, recounts her childhood under the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979. During that period, Ung lost her parents and two sisters in the genocide that claimed the lives of nearly 2 million Cambodians. Her story reached wider audiences with a 2017 Netflix film adaptation directed by Angelina Jolie.
“Loung Ung reminds us of the importance of giving a voice to those who have experienced genocide,” said Andrea Brookover, executive director of the Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Education Commission. “We know that when individuals hear someone tell their story it creates a personal connection.”
Ung, who now resides in Cleveland, has become a prominent educator and advocate for genocide awareness and remembrance. Approximately 7,000 Cambodians currently live in Ohio, and the event aims to deepen understanding of a complex historical tragedy that still resonates in many communities.
“The Cambodian genocide took place at a very turbulent time in history, and many Ohioans were affected,” Brookover said. “The fact that Loung Ung is an Ohioan living in Cleveland also makes this complex global history more accessible. We are fortunate to have Loung in our community educating so many.”
OHGMEC, which is organizing the event, promotes awareness and education on genocides to foster a more informed public. Its initiatives have reached thousands of students, educators, and residents statewide.
