Cleveland Nonprofit Launches Waiting Room Childcare Program for Families Battling Cancer

CLEVELAND, Ohio – My Sister’s Keeper, a Cleveland-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering women battling cancer, has launched an innovative childcare program, Waiting Room Watchers, to support families during medical appointments. This pioneering service, funded by Dr. Sherwood McClelland, a Radiation Oncologist at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, aims to provide peace of mind to parents facing the dual challenges of cancer treatment and childcare.

The program allows families to book professional caregivers to look after their children in waiting rooms while parents attend medical procedures. With trained staff available to meet parents and children at hospitals, the initiative ensures a safe and nurturing environment for children during critical moments.

“Cancer doesn’t just affect individuals; it impacts entire families,” said Sherri White, President and CEO of My Sister’s Keeper. “For women undergoing treatment, the weight of providing care for their children while fighting for their lives can feel impossible. Waiting Room Watchers ensures that no parent has to choose between their health and their children’s safety. This program provides not just childcare, but peace of mind and hope.”

The caregivers, trained in basic first aid and CPR, are selected to create a supportive atmosphere that prioritizes children’s safety. Booking services are exclusively available through the organization’s website, myskcle.org, simplifying access for families in need.

Dr. McClelland, whose funding made the initiative possible, expressed his commitment to supporting families during their journeys with cancer. “This program is a testament to the power of community in helping those in need. It ensures families are not burdened by logistical hurdles at a time when their focus should be on healing,” he said.

Waiting Room Watchers is one of several programs My Sister’s Keeper offers to aid families navigating the challenges of cancer. Families can visit the website to learn more or schedule caregiver services.
