Cleveland's West Side Market - 110 Years of Wonder
Updated: Sep 21, 2023
OHIO CITY - Gremi takes us on an exploration of Cleveland's famous West Side Market. If you grew up in Cleveland, or even moved here later in life, there is no doubt that you're familiar with the West Side Market. This incredible Cleveland staple opened it's glorious doors on November 2, 1912, meaning it just celebrated it's 110th birthday. The construction of the West Side Market began in 1908, nearly a year before construction began on the Titanic, and it opened it's doors to Clevelanders just over 6 months after the historic ship made its infamous and ill-fated journey.
Stepping inside the market is like stepping out of a time machine. While we may not have been around to walk these corridors when the ribbon was first cut, you certainly get an idea of what that was like simply by walking around it today. The architecture alone will take your breath away. Standing in the center of the market and gazing up at the 44-foot-high vaulted ceilings, each inch covered in historic and immaculate Guastavino tile, is enough to give you chills and give you a small taste of the eras gone by.
