Great Northern Mall Cinema Rises from the Ashes with $5 Million Investment from Phoenix Theatres
NORTH OLMSTED, OH - The curtain is rising again at Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted, Ohio, as Phoenix Theatres announces its latest venture: revitalizing the movie-going experience in the Cleveland area. With a $5 million investment, the Michigan-based cinema company is set to refurbish a 10-screen theatre, infusing the mall with new energy and state-of-the-art cinematic technology.
Phoenix Theatres, an independent movie theatre company established 24 years ago, has a history of breathing new life into closed theatres in vibrant retail spaces. Their latest project at Great Northern Mall is poised to be a beacon of entertainment, featuring Dolby ATMOS® audio, 4K laser digital projection, and premium reclining heated seating across its 43,955-square-foot area.
Mike Walsh, Senior General Manager at Great Northern Mall, shared insights into the mall's resilience in the face of challenges posed by the pandemic and the rise of online shopping. "Everything is experiential nowadays. It's about dwell time, spending time and staying here... and that's where we looked at, obviously a theater, with that experiential piece," Walsh said in an interview with Cleveland 13 News. He emphasized the importance of social gatherings in today's world, adding, "In this day and age, it's about the social gathering, getting people together, and you can't do that on Amazon, you can't do that online."
This new development marks Phoenix Theatres' 69th screen and its second location in Ohio, indicating a significant expansion of their footprint in the region. The company's plan includes transforming all 10 auditoriums with Dolby Digital sound, Christie Digital Projection, and 100-percent reclining seating, enhancing the movie experience to a level previously unseen in the area.
North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones expressed enthusiasm about the project. "We are thrilled that the big screen is coming back to North Olmsted. Like many residents, I was disappointed when the theatre first closed. We've been working closely with mall ownership to ensure that the mall remains a thriving center for years to come," she remarked.
Cory Jacobson, President of Phoenix Theatres, and Jordan Hohman, Vice President of Project Development, highlighted the company's commitment to providing a unique, high-quality cinema experience. The focus on details that larger national chains might overlook is a cornerstone of their strategy.
Michael Archer, Vice President of Worldwide Cinema Sales at Dolby, acknowledged Phoenix Theatres' commitment to excellence. "They are committed to bringing a first-class presentation to the community, and having auditoriums equipped with Dolby ATMOS will ensure a premium, immersive audio experience," he stated.
Great Northern Mall, a 1.2-million-square-foot shopping center, has been a staple in the Cleveland area, offering a blend of shopping, dining, and entertainment. Its continued evolution, exemplified by Phoenix Theatres' latest investment, marks a significant step in the mall's journey towards becoming a central hub for community engagement and entertainment.
As Great Northern Mall and Phoenix Theatres gear up for a summer 2024 grand opening, the community eagerly anticipates the return of a beloved pastime, promising a blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge technology that will redefine movie-going in North Olmsted.
