(WCTU) - The Hubble Space Telescope has released its largest photo mosaic to date, showcasing an awe-inspiring section of the Andromeda Galaxy. Located 2.5 million light-years away, Andromeda is a vast spiral galaxy that appears tilted 77 degrees from Earth’s perspective. The mosaic, a result of over 10 years of work, consists of at least 2.5 billion pixels and provides an extraordinary view of approximately 200 million stars.

Kalpana Pot, an actor and self-described “space nerd,” brought additional attention to the achievement on her TikTok channel @toknerdytome, where she has amassed an impressive 220,000 followers. “After 1,000 orbits and about 600 overlapping fields of view, Hubble stitched together a mind-blowing mosaic of only a part of Andromeda,” Pot shared in her post, which has since gone viral.

The image highlights Andromeda’s immense scale, containing a fraction of the galaxy’s estimated one trillion stars. Pot’s post helped her audience grasp the galaxy’s vastness by adding perspective. “Andromeda is 2.5 million light-years away; one light-year is 5.8 trillion miles, y’all,” she explained while zooming in to reveal intricate details in the mosaic.

This achievement also serves as a tribute to Edwin Hubble, the astronomer who first identified Andromeda as a separate galaxy outside the Milky Way a century ago. Pot reflected on this connection, saying, “It’s only fitting that now, his namesake telescope continues his legacy by looking at this galaxy in a way we’ve never seen before.”

Scientists are using the image to study the structure and evolution of spiral galaxies like Andromeda, which shares similarities with our Milky Way. Beyond its scientific value, the mosaic’s stunning beauty has captured the imagination of the public. Pot summed up its appeal succinctly: “Sometimes, space is just about pretty pictures.”

The release of this mosaic reaffirms Hubble’s pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the cosmos while inspiring both scientists and the general public. With creators like Pot using social media to share these breakthroughs, the reach of such discoveries continues to expand.
