HOLLYWOOD, CA — The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were unveiled Thursday morning, revealing a competitive field of films that span genres and global perspectives. Emilia Pérez, a French musical about a Mexican cartel leader who undergoes a gender transition, emerged as the front-runner with 13 nominations, including Best Picture. This marks a historic moment for non-English-language films, with Emilia Pérez earning the most nominations ever in this category.

The race for Best Picture is particularly diverse, featuring 10 nominees: Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked. Each film brings unique narratives and bold artistic visions, making this year’s competition one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.

Director Jacques Audiard, who helmed Emilia Pérez, also garnered a nod for Best Director, a category that includes Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Sean Baker (Anora). Fargeat is the sole female nominee, a distinction she described as both gratifying and indicative of the need for continued progress. “It’s time for a change,” she said. “We’re trying to crack the monolithic world we’ve inherited, and I made this film to express everything I wanted to say.”

In acting categories, first-time nominees dominate. Ariana Grande (Wicked) and Mikey Madison (Anora) are both celebrating their inaugural nominations in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress categories, respectively. Grande, visibly emotional, said, “I haven’t stopped sobbing since I found out.” She noted the joy of sharing this moment with co-star Cynthia Erivo, also nominated for her role in Wicked.

Mikey Madison described the moment she found out about her nomination while FaceTiming her family, including her dog. “I feel humbled and overjoyed,” she said. Her co-star Yura Borisov also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Demi Moore, a first-time nominee for her leading role in The Substance, expressed gratitude for the recognition. Reflecting on the parallels between The Substance and her iconic film Ghost, she said, “This could have been an absolute disaster, but it defied the norm by mixing genres.”

The Brutalist, a historical drama, and Wicked, the long-awaited adaptation of the Broadway musical, tied for second place with 10 nominations each. Both films are represented in major categories such as Best Picture, with Wicked also earning nods in Original Score and Costume Design.

Technical achievements were widely celebrated, with Dune: Part Two earning nominations in categories such as Visual Effects, Sound, and Cinematography. Animated films also had their moment, with Inside Out 2 and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl among the nominees for Best Animated Feature.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Conan O’Brien hosting the ceremony, which will air live on ABC and Hulu.

This year’s awards season has been deeply impacted by the devastating California wildfires, which have caused widespread damage and disruption across the region. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences postponed the announcement of nominations twice due to the fires, initially planned for January 9, then January 17, before finally unveiling the list on January 23. Additionally, events such as the Oscars Nominees Luncheon have been canceled, and live performances of the nominated original songs will not take place, with the focus shifting to honoring the songwriters instead. Despite the challenges, the Academy Awards remain a beacon of celebration and resilience for the film industry and its community. Here is a Full List of Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards:
